
What is the Green Volt Project?

The Green Volt project is a pioneering floating offshore wind farm being built in the North Sea, approximately 80 km off the coast of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is being developed by a joint venture between Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn.
Key facts:
Capacity: Up to 560 MW from 35 floating wind turbines.
Why floating? Unlike traditional offshore wind farms fixed to the seabed, Green Volt’s turbines sit on floating platforms anchored to the seabed. This allows installation in much deeper water, where wind speeds are generally higher and more consistent.
Purpose: It is designed to:
Supply renewable electricity to the UK National Grid.
Electrify nearby North Sea oil and gas platforms (including the Buzzard field), replacing gas-fired power generation offshore and significantly reducing emissions.
The project is expected to:
Save around 1 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.
Contribute approximately £2.5 billion in Gross Value Added.
Create over 2,800 jobs during construction and around 100 long-term operational jobs.
Green Volt has already received:
Onshore and offshore planning consent.
A UK Contracts for Difference (CfD) award, helping guarantee a price for the electricity it generates.
Approval under Scotland’s INTOG (Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas) leasing programme, specifically aimed at using offshore wind to decarbonise offshore oil and gas production.
